3 Common Issues Women Face

Taking care of a women’s healthcare is an important part of life. So many factors and concerns can cause anxiety and worry. Every little ache and pain can indicate something wrong or just be another part of a normal cycle. It is important to stay on top of regular checkups. Visiting the gynecologist for any concerns is also important. While self diagnosis is never a good idea, it is important to be aware of common issues that women face.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common problem women face. According to the Endometriosis Foundation of America, one in 10 women encounter this problem. This condition takes place when tissue from the lining of the uterus, the endometrium, is found outside the uterus in other parts of the body. This tissue usually attaches to other parts of the reproductive system, the bladder, and the rectum. It can be very painful and cause problems with fertility. Some women however, never experience symptoms. Some symptoms can include painful, heavy menstruation that lasts seven days or longer, bladder and bowel issues, nausea, and pain during intercourse.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is another common problem in women’s healthcare. According to Anuja Dokras, MD, Director of the Penn Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Center, 15 percent of American women have this condition, many of which don’t realize it. This health issue happens when a woman’s ovaries or adrenal glands produce excessive male hormones. The most common symptom is the growth of cysts on the ovaries. Other symptoms include rapid weight gain, patches of dark rough skin, abnormal facial or body hair growth, infertility, and irregular period cycles.

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are also common among American women. This women’s healthcare concern affects women of childbearing age. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 30 percent of women between 25 to 44 have symptoms of fibroids. Risk factors that increase chances include being over 40, being overweight, family history of fibroids, no history of pregnancy, and low levels of vitamin D.
